Real Stories

It’s easy to talk about numbers, parcels delivered, donations given, projects completed...but behind every number is a person.

A parent struggling to provide.
Someone facing loneliness.
A life interrupted by unexpected hardship.

Here are some of their stories, offering a glimpse into the realities people face and the difference that timely support and compassion can make.

(For the purpose of confidentiality we won’t be sharing personal details)

Gardening help

We received a referral from the local council about a woman who was using a wheelchair and struggling with her mental health. Unfortunately, she did not meet the criteria for council funding, leaving her without the support she needed.

Her garden had become so overgrown that she was unable to safely leave her home, which added to her isolation.

In response, a team of our volunteers stepped in to help. Together, they cleared the garden and restored safe access to her home, making it possible for her to get outside again and enjoy the summer months.

She was incredibly grateful for the support. Being able to leave her home again not only improved her living conditions but also had a positive impact on her mental wellbeing.

This is the kind of practical difference that our one-off projects can make.

Supporting a single mother in need

A social prescriber referred a mum to us who needed support decluttering and rearranging her home to make it safer and more accessible for her children.

We arranged for two volunteers to visit and help. When they arrived, it was clear there was a significant need, but the mum was understandably overwhelmed and found it difficult to accept practical help.

Our volunteers took a different approach. Instead of rushing in, they slowed down, spent time talking with her, and created a space where she felt comfortable and not under pressure. Gradually, they were able to support her in going through some important paperwork.

At the end of the visit, the mum shared how much it meant simply to have someone listen and sit with her.

While the team initially felt they hadn’t achieved much in practical terms, they came to realise something important, sometimes the greatest support we can offer is time, patience, and genuine care.

Not every impact is visible, but it is always meaningful.

A Message of Care on Mother’s Day

Over the past few years, we have partnered with a local charity supporting women escaping domestic violence to provide Mother’s Day gifts.

This year, we were able to prepare 30 bags filled with small gifts and an encouraging card for each woman.

We later received a message from the charity sharing the impact these gifts had:

“I just wanted to email to say a massive thank you for the Mother’s Day bags you donated to us. Some of the women were tearful and so happy to receive the bag and said how lovely it was that they were thought of.”

For many of the women supported by the charity, this small gesture served as a reminder that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten.

Sometimes the simplest acts of kindness carry the deepest meaning.

A New Start for a Refugee Family

We were made aware of a refugee family who had fled their home country and arrived with very little. They were in urgent need of basic support, including bicycles to help them travel to school, work, and essential appointments.

In response, many of our volunteers came together to donate bicycles for both the parents and children, along with a range of household items to help them begin settling into their new home in Bedford.

As the family began to adjust, the mother later reached out asking for support for her son, who was struggling to keep up at school due to language barriers. While we were not able to provide formal English lessons, some of our volunteers spent time with the children during the summer holidays, reading together and playing games to help build their confidence and improve their English through conversation and everyday interaction.

This ongoing support helped the family feel more connected, welcomed, and supported as they began rebuilding their lives.
